An epic city in East Java and home to the Indonesian navy, Surabaya is second only to Jakarta in terms of size, and for some tourists, can be slightly daunting and overwhelming. However, with just a little advance tourism planning, a trip to the lively city of Surabaya can be extremely enjoyable, and although initially very modern in its appearance, there are certainly traces of the past.

It is true to say that a large number of the visitors arriving in Surabaya are simply here to catch a bus or train to Bali. However, there really is plenty to see and if you fit into that category, do make the time to sightsee here in this city, regarded by many to have indisputable connections to the origins of the Indonesian nation. There are two main tourist information outlets in Surabaya, both of which lie on the southern side of the city, on the Jalan Aditywarman and on the Jalan Wisata Menanggal.

The city centre sprawls around the Plaza Surabaya and also the Jalan Pemuda, which heads in a westerly direction from the Gubeng railway station and is where a number of large hotels are situated. Surabaya Zoo (Kebun Binatang) lies a fair distance to the south of the actual city centre and is a solid family attraction, as is the appealing stretch of sand better known to holiday makers as Kenjeran Beach. If you are in this part of Java with children, then an afternoon playing on the water slides at Ciputra Waterpark is an absolute must. Although most tourists choose to base themselves in the very centre of Surabaya, it is the 'Old City' area, around the Red Bridge (Jembatan Merah), where many of the best historical attractions reside. These include good examples of colonial Dutch architecture, which line the canal and the adjacent Jalan Jembatan Merah. The 15th-century Ampel Mosque (Mesjid Ampel) is possibly the most striking landmark in this area of Surabaya and stands within the atmospheric Arab quarter. Several good museums are situated in central Surabaya and provide information about the city's past and much more besides. At the House of Sampoerna you will be able to learn about the history of the famed 'Kretek' cigarettes and how they are still rolled by hand. Located on the southerly side of Surabaya, the Museum Mpu Tantular is filled with ancient fossils and prehistoric treasures. The Monumen Kapal Selam (Submarine Monument) may also be of interest and is actually quite a surprise to most, since it is actually a retired Russian submarine named the 'Pasopati'. East Java has plenty of tourist attractions within reach of Surabaya, should you wish to venture outside of the city environs. Especially close to Surabaya is the city of Malang, the ever-popular Taman Safari II and its Asian tigers, and the very family friendly Wisata Bahari Lamongan amusement park. For holiday makers with an interest in history and archaeology, the astounding Majapahit temple ruins are simply a must and are thought to have once been part of the ancient Majapahit Empire.
